There are three ways to activate a debit card: via an ATM machine, via netbanking, and via phone banking. Each method includes a set of simple, hassle-free steps.

Today, anyone who opens a savings or current account at a bank is provided a debit card that is given as part of the welcome kit. A debit card is a highly useful financial product that lets you withdraw cash, pay bills, and shop online as well as offline. However, a debit card must be activated by the cardholder before it can be used. There are three easy ways to activate a debit card. Each of these three methods has been elucidated below in a step-by-step fashion.

Activation Via ATM Machine

If you are wondering how to activate a new debit card via an ATM Machine, here are the steps to be followed:

  • Open the sealed envelope to get the four-digit PIN provided to you by the bank.
  • Put the debit card inside the ATM machine.
  • Enter the debit card number and ATM pin given by the bank.
  • Create a new ATM pin of your choice. Make sure it is something you will easily be able to remember.
  • Follow the directions on the machine to enter the new ATM PIN. Your card is now activated.

Activation via Netbanking

You may activate your debit card online using the following steps:

  • Log in to the internet banking portal of the bank in which you have an account.
  • Navigate your way to the ‘Debit Card’ section of the portal.
  • Select the option where it says “generate PIN” or “create PIN” or “make PIN”.
  • On selecting this option, the portal will give you specific instructions on how to activate your debit card.
  • Just follow those steps to activate your debit card online.

Activation via Phone Banking

Read the following steps to learn how to activate a debit card via your bank’s phone banking service:

  • Call on the phone banking number provided by your bank.
  • Speak with a customer service executive at the bank.
  • Simply follow the instructions provided by the executive to activate your debit card over the call.

As an added layer of security, several banks today send a one-time password OTP to the customer’s registered mobile number for verification and activation of a new debit card. It is therefore important to make sure that you have ready access to the registered mobile number when activating your debit card.
