How to Create a UPI ID?

Posted on Wednesday, January 29th, 2025 | By IndusInd Bank

In today’s digital world, it has become possible to transfer money within seconds thanks to UPI IDs.

But, what is a UPI ID? It is a virtual payment address that allows you to transfer money between bank accounts in an instant, without the need to share bank details.

Understanding how to create a UPI ID and manage it can make your financial transactions easier and faster. Let’s learn more in this regard.

Steps to Create a UPI ID

Creating a UPI ID is a straightforward process that can be done through your bank’s mobile app or a UPI-enabled application. Here’s how to create a UPI ID:

1. Download a UPI-Enabled App

First, download a UPI-enabled app or your bank’s mobile app, like the IndusMobile app.

2. Register Your Mobile Number

Open the app and register using the mobile number linked to your bank account. You will receive a One-Time Password (OTP) on this number, for verification.

If you are an existing user of your bank’s mobile app, you may not have to go through this step.

3. Link Your Bank Account

After verifying your mobile number, go to the ‘add new bank account’ section. The section’s name may vary based on the app. In some apps, you can visit this section after clicking on your profile photo.

This step will allow you to link your bank account to the app. The app will fetch your bank details using your registered mobile number.

4. Create a New UPI ID

Now, you will get to generate a new UPI ID (such as yourname@bankname) during the setup process. You will be using this ID to send and receive money.

5. Set UPI PIN

Finally, you must set a UPI PIN. You will be using this PIN to authenticate all your transactions.

How to Create and Remove an Extra UPI ID?

Sometimes, you may need multiple UPI IDs for different purposes. Here’s how to create a new UPI ID and remove it:

  1. Open the UPI-enabled app where your bank account is linked.
  2. Go to the profile or settings section of the app.
  3. Select the option to create a new UPI ID and follow the prompts.

To remove an existing UPI ID, go to the manage UPI IDs section. Select the ID you wish to remove, and you will get an option to remove or delete it.

Benefits of Using UPI ID for Financial Transactions

When you generate a UPI ID and transact using it, you open the door for the following advantages:

1. Instant Transfers

UPI allows instant money transfers between bank accounts 24/7, including holidays.

2. Security

UPI transactions are secured with two-factor authentication. This makes UPI a safe and reliable way to transact.

3. Convenience

With UPI IDs, there is no need to remember bank account numbers and IFSC codes, simplifying the payment process.

4. Wide Acceptance

UPI is accepted across various platforms. You can use your UPI ID for online shopping, bill payments, peer-to-peer transfers, and more.

5. No Extra Charges

Banks do not charge extra fees for UPI transactions. This makes it a cost-effective solution for everyday payments.

6. Ease of Use

It is simple and easy to generate a UPI ID and manage it. In addition, the user-friendly interface of UPI apps makes transactions hassle-free even for those who may not be tech-savvy.
