If you have ever been on a road trip, there is a possibility that you had to wait in long queues of vehicles on toll plazas on some of India’s National Highways. Bumper to bumper traffic on these toll plazas is a common sight that nobody is looking forward to and when your turn finally arrives to zoom past the toll, having to pay the same in cash is another hassle.
The traditional way of paying tolls in cash is slow and leads to long wait times for vehicles. It further leads to traffic, pollution, and is not a cost-effective way of collecting toll for the government.
In 2017, in order to cater to these problems and to better manage toll plazas throughout the country, the government of India introduced the FASTag facility.
Read on to know what a FASTag is and how to apply for one online.
What is the FASTag?
FASTag is a sticker that is placed on the front windshield of your vehicle that uses radio frequency identification (RFID) technology to communicate with a toll plaza, when you cross one. The toll amount is deducted automatically and completely electronically from a linked bank account or prepaid wallet. It eliminates the need to make cash payments , reduces wait time for each vehicle
and makes the process of paying tolls efficient. FASTag has played a major role in solving the problem of exhaustive traffic, pollution, and the time-taking process of making cash payments.
